I have recently opened 5poundstore.com and I am wondering what do you think would be best for me to advertise it for free? I have started a facebook group for it and am thinking about maybe using craiglist.

In theory it sounds like a good move in todays economy but i think with the likes of poundstretcher and poundland i think you may have missed the boat,i think it may well earn revenue if you can find alot of item at a fiver,do you have a site up and running all ready.
Yes I have the site up and running and literally have over 1000 products waiting to be added its just getting the time to add them 1 at a time focus on the site itself how im going to market it etc theirs a lot that needs to be done for only 1 person.

Facebook is a good place.Possible this is something you must place before hobbyists looking for tools, house wifes looking for some accessories and students. These are the communities you should target.Be patient, building a community takes time and effort. You can simply make certain offers like a weekly prize, etc to attract visitors online- though its not free marketing, but it helps sites like yours.
Thank you so much for your feedback its much appreciatedbut how would you go about building a community through facebook? how would you get people to "like" your fan page ?

Well,I would say forget about Likes(though that may the final objective) and positively engage with the groups.People themselves will add likes to your Page,if they find that your posts and effort is sincere and that you are not trying to sell to them(People would like to buy rather than being sold).
I think forum sites will really help you to advertise.....
or clissified may be one one option.........
Yes adding your website on craglist would help in getting traffic for your website, but what i recommend to you is go and avail SEO services offered by SEO PK - A Search Engine Optimization & Internet Marketing Company - Home

I think it's cool! Right now, there is no targeted audience other than everyone that can use a computer and that wants to buy a product for 5 pounds. Whereas if the items listed were directed towards a certain audience (say teens, students, back to school etc.) you'd be able to better advertise. I know through my hostgator account, I have subdomains so I can use wateringhole.pooledminds.com and pooledminds.com
Not sure the extra work on your end, but if you have tech.5poundstore.com and school.5poundstore.com you can throw some advertising around the uni "here, check out school.5poundstore.com for your back to school needs."
just a thought.

Success only comes before Work in the dictionary.
The problem with 'likes' in my mind, is that facebook is constantly trying to generate money to validate its worth and they do this through advertising revenue.
After managing several pages for local businesses, I have realized that it has gotten progressively harder to promote and share your page with facebook users.
Before you could at least suggest the page to a group of people and that 'like' would appear on their friends news feed, which would gather more followers. Now it seems to be only facebook ads and third party media that will draw in new fans.
I know its all in good business for facebook, but this is still a growing industry and they haven't worked out the kinks. My short term solution is to establish a standard facebook profile under the name of your business and start recruiting fans by adding them as friends. I have seen it work for too many competitors to mention.
Sounds like you need to learn about "Guerilla Marketing"
