I think seo is the best source of traffic with least amount of work in the long run. You also want to participate in forums to network with fellow entrepreneurs.

I have to say article marketing works best for me. I also use blogs, squidoo lenses and hubpages to create a network of links.

Craigslist is good, depending on what type of business you are in.

All in all, other than paid advertising like Adwords, article marketing brings in 90% of my traffic. To be successful with articles, you have to know how to utilize your keywords properly and write articles that are compelling and informative.

    Just my two cents!

Link Referral is a great way to get free traffic. If you are willing to invest, there are many forms of paid advertising, but it is hard for many companies to be able to afford them. I am seeing huge results with my company because we offer ads without PPC, fixed rate, monthly charge, no hidden fees. See how it works at localcheapadz.com

This one is pretty easy. Give away free stuf. Free information that others want. For example. i havnt posted anything new to my very new blog in a week now. Ye t my list is growing like crazy because ppl keep going there to sign up for my email list because of the value of the free information i am giving away.

Kinda sells its self ya think?

    article submission
    blog commenting
    forum posting
    classified ads
    directory submission
    social bookmarking
    link exchange

When it comes to content, make sure that it attracts lots of visitors. Remember, content is king!

    Forget Traffic, let's talk sales.

My only method, other than maybe a few who find me on a SE, where I do zero SEO, comes from forums.

They know me, they trust me, others recommend me and I do quite well at it.

In about 14 months I have about 950 registered customers on my dropship / wholesale electronics shopping cart strictly from forums. I have over 150 hosting clients, most with shopping carts, again totally from forums. And I've sold over 700 memberships in a wholesale list website that is not mine, again strictly on forums.

In general, I do not start a lot of threads talking about what I offer, I simply respond when someone asks "Where can I?", "How can I?", etc. It helps that I know what I am talking about when I do answer and I avoid getting into discussions where I am not sure of what I am talking about.

Could I do more if I invested the time I spend on forums into doing SEO work, instead? Possibly. But I would not have made near as many friends from around the world, nor helped near as many people begin their entry into online sales.

Would it work for everyone? No, but it does for me.

I've tried Facebook Ads with no success. I had a $50 credit and haven't even used all of it yet. I also have a Facebook group for my company and frequently post status updates. I send out a few promotional emails to friends and family here and there but haven't found a way to get out of the local market.

I did a pet expo last month that was local. I had a TON of compliments and people take my card, but not many orders online afterward.

I'm also a member and frequent poster on a few forums that pertain to my dog breed, as my business is in pet apparel and accessories, but they will not allow members (even paying/donation members like me) to mention their website/business in a post or in their signature without a payment of $40 or more.

Which forums do you post to that allows this? Also, what ways have you found (besides Facebook and Twitter) to get your name out nationally rather than just locally to people you know?

    My Way of Getting Traffic

I have never tried forum posing before, but i am looking into it now. Usually i use article writing and submission to get traffic, i find as long as i do a good job with the article it does bring in some traffic but not enough. Kind of have to branch out and use multiple methods which i am starting to realize now. Lol it just takes up time, but i have more than enugh time anyways so no big deal.

SEO. Search engines deliver the most relevant, results-oriented traffic. I shy away from SEO "techniques", however. Strictly solid content with a natural level of relevant keywords.

Facebook. My market is college students, and with 99 percent of them "wasting" time on the site, it's all about strategical usage of the fan page at peak hours (when we're suppose to be studying)
