Make your followers know you as someone who is an expert in his field.
Try to build trust and then everything will go smoothly from then.

Spamming twitter with advertisements never helps. I agree with the comment above. After all, twitter was made to talk and connect with people, not to advertise. Best way is to advertise yourself through conversation, and or illustrate yourself as a professional.

Just like any other social network, you have to give something to get something. Provide people with information regarding your industry - news, tips, links to other blog posts.

You have to establish yourself as someone who is going to give others good information, not just push your product on people. It is certainly ok to talk about your product/business but not all the time.

You are a graphic designer? Talk about current projects you are working on, issues you are facing, tips you have learned.

I second that. I won't follow a person if I see that all they do is advertise their crap non-stop.

Only add people that you think would be interested.

Work with the 25% rule. 75% of your content should be fun and non-ad worthy.

The other 25% can be your website, blog and other advertisements.

You want to attract followers and not push them away with your ads.

    goodluck!

Provide great content. Be someone that they want to follow. Give your followers a reason to want to pay attention to you, your tweets, and your opinion.

Establishing yourself as an expert in your field is going to be crucial as well as the valuable content that you provide.

    Cheers!

My experience on using social media as marketing, no matter twitter, facebook, myspace.... first step is come up with a strategic plan, brainstorm ith your staff and your loyal users, then you can decide where your marketing resources can be best use for internet marketing.

Remember within social media world, engage your audience's senses, be more creative ,engage and entertain them.

As Lark said above, I also advise my clients on using a ratio of some sorts.

10-1 8-1 5-1 (first number relating to personal/non-business, second number relating to business/sales pitch)

It depends on how "boring" or "exciting" your marketing efforts are relating to your business. If you simply dump boring product info tweets on your followers, your not going to effectively reach your audience like you would hope to.

Spice it up some, have fun!

For instance; let's say you own a coffee shop and every day you offer a free cup of joe for the first 10 people who answer a trivia question about your business (maybe from your company history page).

That's a fun way to get people to visit your website, learn about your company, FOLLOW YOUR TWEETS MORE CLOSELY, and allow them to also benefit from the interaction.

    Happy Socializing!

Agree very much ''75% of your content should be fun and non-ad worthy'' Social media marketing should be viral in nature. I also find that pictures and videos usually create a more powerful impact than boring static text.

There has been a lot of great information about this topic shared so far, one of the most important things to remember is that its important to build relationships. Yes provide value and content is important however establishing strong one on one relationships with people in your target market is very important to. It shouldn't be just about posting content, it shold be primarily about networking.

As soime people have said its important you don't sell/spam, instead everything you do in social media should be about pre-selling, feel free to check out my blog post at MarkBlomeley.com about this .

I have personally found twitter growth and effectiveness has been slowly and going backwards a little, but would like to hear others opinions about this.
