One rule that i was always told, if you want to make money with a product on twitter, get them OFF twitter. Connect with them through email/facebook/skype, twitter helps you break the ice with your potential customers but it helps to be able to type more than 140 words! Provide content, ALWAYS reply to your Re-tweets, reply to the direct messages that aren't completely robot sounding. But, i always follow the get them off twitter rule.

Mark has made a good point about twitter's effectiveness being slow, this is mainly due to the fact that people tend to shy away from twitter when it comes to small business marketing. One scenario is what Matt referred to; the 'off twitter rule'. I wonder if this is why twitter is now opting to pair with third party apps.

Agree so much about ''relationship building'', there is the biggest misconception is that because you work on the internet then you dont have to physically interact with other individuals! Online work settings requires same networking skills as real-world.

Work with the 25% rule. 75% of your content should be fun and non-ad worthy.

The other 25% can be your website, blog and other advertisements.

You want to attract followers and not push them away with your ads.

    goodluck!
    That is solid advice.
