    Tips on Building a Brand

    Hey Guys,

Curious if anyone had tips and/or recommended reading on building a brand. I'm trying to learn how to build a brand and have my brand associated with a specific need.

For example, I want my fitness equipment to be the first that comes to mind when you're thinking about opening a gym.

Branding is both an art and a science, and it takes precision, planning and nuance to pull off the ideal image for your company and products. I'm not sure about printed books, but here are a few websites with a wealth of information about building a brand:

    I hope that helps!

Read a book from Al Ries and Jack Trout titled Positioning: The Battle for your Mind. You can get it on Amazon pretty cheap.

    My advice would be:

Decide who your target audience is first. Be very, very specific. Imagine what that customer actually looks like. How old is he? How does he dress? Where does he live? What are his hobbies?

Once you understand that, you can then get your message out in front of him using the most appropriate advertising medium.

Create a killer (ultra-professional looking) website that showcases your product. Drive traffic to it by getting your message in front of that target audience.

That all depends on how you advertise. For clients around your area, you can start giving away promotional products with your business name on it like mugs, umbrellas. These items are cool since people use them everyday. This is a cool way to make people know your services.

A brand should reflect the core purpose, values, and style of your company.

So many times I see business owners rushing to logo design, web design, etc. However all of these things will give subtle cues to your customers about the purpose, values, and styles of your company.

Therefore, the best process is to clearly identify the qualities, values, and style that you would like your brand to represent. Then you can consciously choose colors, images, sounds, and a writing style that communicates those things effectively.

Please don't rush into the development of the brand deliverables, start out with clearly defining your identity first.

Here's a good start. Answer these questions:

    1. What is the purpose of your company? Answer this question in belief statements, i.e. "We believe that human connection is at the root of progress, development, and personal happiness" (this is one of our beliefs at Feathr.

    2. Translate those beliefs/purpose into values. Values include things like transparency, simplicity, relevance, respect, environmentally-conscoius etc. (skip the basics like integrity, trustworthiness, etc. People already expect that).

    3. Now determine the style which reflects those values and beliefs, i.e. young, rebellious, or cultured, polished, etc.

Now you have a standard of measurement by which to evaluate any marketing message or brand representation that is delivered.

Feel free to get in touch for further thoughts or feedback.

Logo is very important in your brand. It should convey the message just by seeing it. There is so much involved in creating a logo.

Brand building like many other online marketing strategies can be time consuming. It is therefore best to integrate this strategy whenever possible with other functions of your business to make the best use of your time. One of the most effective branding strategies you can use is article submissions since this strategy is an excellent tool for developing an image online.

Couple suggestions from my own experience in building a brand, some of which are mentioned above.

Samples are great and also include a discount code if they make a purchase if you have a website which sells direct.

If possible I would use your own products as give a ways NOT mugs shirts etc. Reason being your cost will probably be less, it shows what you sell and the person gets to try it and possibly then buy, or a friend sees it and buys and/or they will give you a testimonial.

Now if you are selling bikes you can't give them away so water bottles etc would be good in my opinion.

Make sure you get the Facebook page with your ACTUAL company name in the URL not what Facebook automatically gives you.

I think building a brand is extremely important and takes time. Be sure that your brand identifies everything that you want your company to stand for, whether that be customer service, quality, or even something abstract like a sense of humor.

It takes time, but a brand is one of the most challenging things to build because it takes time, patience, and sometimes a bit of luck to do right!
