    Social Media Plan

Is it really important for a new business to have a social media plan and if so, what should be included in it?

I believe a Social Media Plan is a third step to a successful internet marketing campaign.

Step 1: Direct Conversion Programs (such as PPC)
Step 2: Ranking Program (such as SEO)
Step 3: Web Presence Program (such SMM)

You have to start with what will make you the most money and then as you can budget other items add them in.

The first step in social media planning is largely the first step in identifying your brand—determine who you are and who your customers are.

A lot of money can be made through social media, look at Perry Belcher, he has a following of over 100,000 people on twitter and makes over a million dollars just from them. Although there are many more important aspects, such as direct conversions as rogerbryan suggested.

There are so many ways to attack social media, but before you get started, you have to know what your purpose is. For example, more business, more leads, engaging customers, getting followers; whatever your purpose is, make sure that you are working towards your goal.

Also, this may be besides the point, but using solely to advertise is not the best idea because remember why people use those networks: to network and stay in touch with their friends and to learn. Make sure that you are adding value wherever you are and start connecting with people!

Social media (SM) is great but remember it is only one tool. I would not suggest moving forward with SM if you don't already have a website set up, so start there. Once you have a site set up you will have a place to send people you reach through social platforms. Additionally it can become overwhelming keeping up with each SM site out there so it would be advisable to use a blog on your site to RSS content through your SM accounts. This will save you a ton of time and still reach many people.

Understand the tool before you use it.

Start creating your social media plan, so you can begin your personal brand and not have to spend your entire day working on social networking. Focus on a few different components of social media marketing and you will find success as long as you stick with the plan you create.
