Should social media be included in marketing books as modern promotional tool?

My View: well, social media are gaining importance and popularity. Marketers worldwide have already started using these platforms for promotion; social media are definitely emerging as modern promotional tools, but they are yet to prove their marketing prowess, and still to go a long way.. so social media can be included in the marketing books as latest developments in the marketing world but not to the list of promotional tools, at least at this point of time.

This is interesting indeed. I believe it will be in Marketing textbooks however social media and networking is growing and more importantly it is evolving very quickly still and I believe it still has a long way to go. Social media has already proven itself as a great marketing channel and as the internet and website alike become more social in nature this will open up some very interesting opportunities

Yes, it's a great tool. But always remember to change with the trends.
For example, a few years ago Myspace was a great marketing place but not Facebook took the lead and also Twitter.
However, Twitter might die in 2 to 5 years and new big thing might come.

Social marketing has always been there but in different forms - before the internet it was called "word-of-mouth" marketing.

Internet social media can be included in books because it's part of the internet age.

Indeed, social media has become a very useful and helpful marketing tool for marketers and business owners. It should be included in marketing textbooks for students to learn the advancement in technology in terms of marketing. Word of Mouth marketing is its counterpart in the olden days, which is still considered one of the most effective marketing tool.

I agree with fezlopez that the trends, whatever it may be, should always be updated. What is "in" today, may be gone tomorrow. There will always be something new and more advanced marketing tool that will come out.

More than getting new customers, I believe Social media marketing is important to connect and interact with your current customers.
It's very important to follow up with your customers often to build relationships.
Sending them messages, showing pictures of new or current products, testimonials,
and showing them you appreciate their business.
Selling to people who already bought your product is easy because they're already
familiar with your products. The most profit in business is from repeating customers.
You want to build relationship with your current customers so they give you business more frequently

Facebook is one of the best tool in my opinion to connect with your customers.
But it all depends on what kind of business you're in. If you're a small business owner, you NEED Facebook Fan Page for your customers
Make sure you do it right though, you want every customers to join your fan page.

Our team and I put together a FREE E-Book about Facebook Marketing. PM me I'll send it to your at no cost.

Goldie, I understand your point, the question is not whether social media be included in the text books, obviously they will eventually be included in major marketing books like philip kotler's etc, and would have already been included in some marketing books. The question is whether it should be included in the list of promotional tools. Today, we call Advertisements, direct marketing, sales promotion, Public Relations and publicity as elements of promotional mix. should social media be included in the promotional mix. The question is ' whether the social media be included in the marketing books as modern promotional tool' that means should it be added as an element of the promotional mix?
