Ha! Everyone seems to own an SEO Company these days. Do you know what type of SEO Services you are looking for? It does very based on your marketing or niche. I would recommend a package that combines small business consulting as well as SEO. SEO with out management consulting is basically worthless. What are you going to do when you reach the #1 spot and your business isn't designed to meet the demand created by your online presence. I'm on the first page for business consultant... that doesn't make me an expert in SEO.. but it has helped me sell my consulting services to a handful of companies.

When choosing an SEO Company ask them what their annual sales are. Also, ask them to show you what sites they have moved to page 1. Make sure the sites are in industries that actually require a little work. Just because an SEO company has their site on page one for a four word search phrase doesn't mean they know what to do for your site nor do they know what to charge.

Selecting a SEO firm is a big deal. Be sure to interview a few, ask for references and understand the techniques they use. Black Hat techniques can cost you (such as buying links). Inc recently did a great article on this - "How Google Cost Me 4 Million".
