My Trashy Website Sucks (in sales)

There was a thread a week or so ago that asked the question "Does Your Website Suck?" I said one of mine did, but still brought in constant sales. (It's done over $1,000 today, a slow Tuesday)

Then, just now on another forum someone asked about another site / product that I have had on the back burner for a year or so. I no longer promote it, since at one time I had the rights to sell the product, but the owner has since changed his marketing and now I am an affiliate, with him collecting the payments.

Not that I mind that, but when it was all my money, going into my PayPal account, I offered anyone not satisfied a full refund. I can no longer do that, so I do not promote it as I once did.

But, I stray. My reason for this thread is to show you a truly sucky site. But, and I swear this is true, I have sold over 750 memberships from this single page. I don't think I would have bought, but plenty of people have. From all over the world.

As I mentioned above, I was offering a full 100% no questions asked refund. Out of 750+ sales I made 2, yes two, refunds.

There has been no real activity there for over a year or so.

There was some copyright issues on the main forum where I promoted it and the forum admin and I spent a day removing all traces.

One other forum had some activity, but hardly any.

Three or four will stumble over it a month now, but I have not promoted it all for 18 months now. Just thought about it when talking about trashy sites.

I've got a 777 member mail list as a result of the sales, so I'd guess actual sales more like 850 or so by now.

I was on a shared reseller server at the time, have since moved to my own dedicated server, so all history is gone as far as stats. To be honest, the only stat I've ever looked at was the PayPal balance.

Probably true. But the fact is that I was known as a respected member of the forums, actually a paid advertiser for other things, such as hosting, lent authenticity to it, I am sure.

And at one time there was a probably 30 page thread with all sorts of endorsements from buyers. Actually had 2 refunds, I can remember them both. One guy swore he bought the same thing on ebay, so I gave him his money back. Didn't cuss the deal, just said he already bought it.

I bought it for $5 as a "resale rights" deal when the guy was offering for $10, then went to $12, $15 and now $19.95. Percentage-wise by far the best investment I ever made. I've always had my own server, it uses maybe 2mb disk space, so virtually no on-going cost.

Looks like crap, costs nothing to own and keeps on giving.....

Now you can see why I poo-poo these "You have to have the best designed site on the web" stuff.

Anyone tried Website Optimizer ? This tool enables you to test different versions of your site content and layout on your webpages. I found it very helpful when it comes to show me how my site is working. At the end, a website should be designed to let users complete the action you want them to take.
