How would I advertise my business in mainstream magazines?

If I wanted to for instance get a full page or half page ad in a magazine like GQ or Playboy or Fortune or any of the other thousand popular magazines how would I do that?

Would I call the magazine directly?

Would I have to go through a large advertising agency and they would contact the magazine?

Does anyone know the range or prices that it costs to have a large ad in one of those popular magazines?

In most cases you can call or email and ask for their advertising rate sheet. Be warned, most national magazines are very expensive. You might try niche magazines. They might be more specific to your audience and cheaper. For example, I was trying to reach MDs in my area, so I put ads in the local Physician's journal. It was very affordable & focused.

If you have some negotiating skills, call the magazine directly and ask for the sales manager. Tell them you are on a limited budget and ask for a media kit. This will include rates, number of subscribers, demographics, coverage, etc. You can usually negotiate the rate way down if you fein some interest, give it a little time and let them call you back, and back, and tell them you are thinking instead of advertising with one of their competitors. They will also give better deals if you commit to more than one issue. It is all a game.

Print advertising is way down right now, so don't be afraid to ask for special placement within the magazine. Big Ad Agencies always ask for front of magazine placement on right-hand page. That's why there are twenty plus pages of pure ads in big national mags.

You may need to find local art talent (or use their art department) to create your ad. Make sure your creative is impactful with just a glance (under 3 seconds). And one last thought, some magazines have regional sections where your ad only goes out to a certain area of the country or to a portion of their subscribers. These will cost less, but in direct relations, will cost more per viewer.

    Hope this helps.

Magazine Advertising is, as you know, costly but still a very good method to market your business. From what I've come upon on the internet, to advertise in Fortune magazine, cost is for an ad of 14 words. Each additional word costs $35.94(per word).

I would suggest a full page ad if you're seriously interested. The attention it attracts from readers is much higher than the half page advertisements.

Just like Scooby said, you need to call the magazine company or publisher, or look in the magazine to find the number the correct number to call.

first you've to decide that content you want to advertise is targeted towards your audience, and has a product description. should be catchy. if your content includes all these things than search a best magazine in your niche and publish a full page add but if you are a main stream company in your category if you are not than a half page add will be good, btu your main focus should on your content. There is a famous quote in advertising "You can have the best product or service in the world, but if people don't buy - it's worthless. So in reality it doesn't matter how wonderful your new product or service is. The real question is - will they buy it?"
