I think you said it in your statement already. It helps generate buzz...
Finding something catchy and utilizing it to create a snowball effect of human interest is what I sum it up to be.

Viewing social media solely as a broadcasting channel can be problematic. Since it is "social" media, you can also use it to listen to your customers or the customers of your competitors. It is a place where businesses, customers and clients to share, learn and grow together.

Social networking can be very useful for promoting small businesses because its primary use is to build relationships, something that can greatly enhance low cost marketing aspects common among all small businesses. By creating both a physical and a virtual relationship with your target audience and existing clients and customers, you are benefiting greatly in many ways.

Another valuable option of using social media, is the fact that you're now capable of reaching potential customers all across the globe without the costs of what it would normally run you to do that.

Social media works wonders, if done right. Not only does it allow you to reach out to thousands if not millions of prospects that you otherwise wouldn't it helps to build and maintain an image for yourself and/or your company. Creating good content and interacting is key, but using keywords helps as well. Besides the fact that it allows you to reach out to people you couldn't before it helps with SEO and much more.

One of the problems I see on twitter how ever, is that mass number of people following each-other just for the sake. I have been very careful with this for myself and my clients. Having a large number of followers can be both good and bad. Afterall how useful is it to have 2,000 followers if none of them really care what you are saying?

It is a very cost effective way of getting your brand and your message out there. This may not seem like a strong goal but this is really the goal of all advertising. An advertisement on TV or radio does not hope to get you to run out right then and buy the product but to get you to remember their name and product.
