How can I market my CONTRACTING business?

I'm from ontario, canada and have been having a hard time marketing my contracting business. I have a very small advertising budget. What are some ways I can get the name out there and get the phone ringing?

If you have a web site, you could try Google Adwords.. make sure your business can be found on the major search engines... you can put details of your business in your signature.

This should help you get going in the right direction. I would also add, you should do some sort of affiliate marketing to bring in some extra dough. Your website should always make you money, even if business is slow. If this doesn't work, then I would go with some adwords advertising.

Are you listed in Google Places and the other major local directories (Bing, Yahoo)? On top of this, you could write and distribute a Press Release online. These are some cheap/free ways to get some instant exposure.

WHat are some of the things that you've already tried and if you don't mind me asking whats a small budget-in this instance? Other considerations are:

• Who is your audience?
• How do they currently find you or vice versa?
• Who are your competitors and what do they do to get business online?

I am asking you this b/c there is really not a cookie cutter approach to this sort of thing. Each business is different and anything that you do online should take this into consideration.

What kind of contracting business are you? What is your target market geographically? Please elaborate. I suppose this is a service oriented company.

For offline marketing, I would suggest you start with your friends and relatives. Show them what you can do. If they are happy with your service, they will surely recommend you to their network of friends.

For online marketing, Create a website of your company. Join the Facebook and Twitter community.

I am also just learning the ropes through observation and forums like this. Hope it helps.
