I just use https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal - It's free and reliable. If you're interested in other methods check my FREE report in my signature.

Google offers an incredible suite of tools that you can use for keyword research. Here are the tools that I personally use all the time:

    Google AdWords Keyword Tool
    Google Insights for Search
    Google Trends

Also, if you are looking for tools that incorporates other data such as searches happening on other major search engines, you can try the following:

SEO Book Keyword Tool - (Registration required but it's totally worth it (FREE))
    WordTracker Free Keyword Suggestion Tool

I'd advice sticking with the Google tools mentioned above. If you can find an additional tooling for a reasonable price, sure why not. But from experience I can tell you, those expensive tools are nothing but expensive headaches

Google Adwords suggestion tool shows Google's inventory to show your ads and not actual searches. I assume, they either correlate keywords (eq. "green potato" gets results from searches of "potato" and "green" or show all their network (Adsense) ads possibilities within those numbers.
When they show that some search phrase, I'm number 1 position should give me 300 visitors per month and I'm actually getting 3-5... I do not trust that number. Therefore, databases like Wordtracker or Trellian have been more accurate for me in their predictions.

The free google keyword tools previously mentioned are pretty good. Another method - check which keywords your competitors are using.

Veikoh are you really allowed to put affiliate links in here! Naughty! Spyfu and KeywordSpy are really not very accurate, the most accurate information available now is that found in google webmasters 'impressions' but you have to of already built the page and be ranking to see these figures. Google keywords will give you an idea but do take with a pinch of salt.
