There has been some good advice given in this thread to help you see the potential responsibilities of undertaking something as large as you are discussing as well as a few strategies on implementing solutions for the traffic you may receive. My additional 2 cents:

Be sure to know the difference between "Receiving Traffic" and "Retaining Traffic". Receiving traffic is great because with this, your website is experiencing an increased number of hits and your product/service is being viewed. Another primary focus though should be on "Retaining Traffic". If you have a product/service that you are looking to sell or even if you are just creating a general community website for a specific topic, you need to have a game-plan to not only lead people to your website but also retain them. Your foundation will come from what we call "regulars" so it is very important to have some sort of incentive or content (whatever it may be) to keep them continuously coming back.
