Advertising: What works and what doesn't

Entrepreneurs: How do you plan to market your product or service? What methods do you think are best? Which ones do you use now or have used in the past? What were the results? Which will you use in the future, and why? Describe your idea of the perfect advertising method.

I think a lot of this depends on what type of business it is and what kind of budget you have. There is a lot of really cheap or free advertising between social networking online, online directories and listings, linkbuilding, etc which are great for smaller companies with not a lot of money to spend but they should also be used by every company no matter the size or the budget because of their effectiveness.

Marketing is an interesting subject because there are so many ways to approach it. One question to ask yourself is "if I was going to buy something like this, how would I expect to hear about it?"

Pretty basic, nothing special. I think social media is a great way to engage customers, but not a good place to advertise your service or product.

Grassroots is effective, door to door allows for direct contact with your demographic, media allows you to reach masses, but you have a budget to keep in mind and an image to protect, so choose wisely.

It depends on your business, budget, market, how creative and out the box you are willing to be. There is so much to marketing; what works for one business may not work for that same business in a different market. Do you have the money to hire an agency to help you? Or hire someone who has experience in marketing and I don't mean someone who is the office manager/marketing person, I mean someone who really knows about marketing.

Interesting topic. I have read Seth Godin's book "Purple Cow" and that actually changed my perspective in Marketing. You have to make your product / services remarkable first and the product will market itself. If you have a remarkable product / services that your existing clients love, then for sure they will also spread the word about you or your product. I started applying his principles into our virtual assistant company and the results are immediately seen. I still do a little bit of marketing every weekends but that's about it... no more brochures or flyers... no more additional marketing expenses!
