Like someone above mentioned, Word of Mouth is great, but it should never be anyone's main strategy, simply because it's unpredictable compared to other modes of advertising. Other than having a great product, maybe advertising designed to get people talking and putting mechanisms in place (referral systems or "tell-a-friend" or social media sharing options on your website), there's not a lot you can do to control whether people are telling their friends about your product or service. Still, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't have the mechanisms in place so that they CAN share it with their friends if they want to.
