Smile 16 Year old starts new social network site for teens.

Yup, that could be the article name of a newspaper that writes about my new creation.

Hey guys, it's been months since I last posted, but it's because I've been working on a new social network site called Kool Pig. KoolPig is a network just for teenagers who want to talk with each other, but I also plan for it to be a student/homework help site too with simplified study guides, free essays, etc. Before KoolPig I was an ebay seller selling ipods and a online soccer retailer (Buy Premium Football Soccer Boots Cleats Shoes In Australia Online ! Online Australian Soccer Shop Store, Buy Mercurial Vapor V Superfly, Buy Adidas Adipure III, Buy Puma V1.10, Buy Adidas Predator X, Buy Premier League Jerseys, Buy Balls, Buy Chelse).

Anyway, the main reason I posted here is that because I have a low budget, I need to find means of promoting the site for nothing. Good PR. I'm trying to get some news sites, blogs that will get to write about me, a high school junior who has created a remarkable social network. Does anyone know any popular news/blog sites that would be interested on writing about my new site? I've already tried contacting the big ones like CNN, BBC, etc but they don't have time to read all their suggestions.

Anyway I would really appreciate some help from the YE community

    Thanks alot in advance!
    Nick.

    Nick -
I'm putting together a social networking website too, for entertainers and venues to connect and book shows. Maybe we could swap some ad space?

You all really need to find different projects... I'm sorry but getting a social network started these days is near impossible... well at least one that makes money. People are sick of MySpace.. they are frustrated with FaceBook... there really isn't much opportunity here.

The exception is that if you can plug a network into a service site then you'll have something. This is like plugging a social network into a corporate site of some type.

If you all are trying to start a network that is going to survive on advertising income... well... sorry you're going to spend a lot of time dreaming.. but little making money

    Yikes! Negative nancy over here!

I do agree, social networking is slowly becoming a thing of the past. However, I'm not really looking to "get rich" off my project. I work in the entertainment industry and there is definitely a need for smaller entertainment acts and venues to interact and have a system to easily book tours and promote products. I thought it'd be a fun project to see if anything happens with it. If not, no big deal... I'm out a few bucks.

I think the key with any website, (social networking or not) is to provide value to it's members. If you are a touring artist and you have access to thousands of venues at your fingertips to book a show in cities you have never been to, it would be a useful tool. In addition, if you are a venue and you are looking to market your specials, products, and ultimately gain more business for free, it would be a useful tool.

So, while I agree with you that social networking has "run it's course" and Twitter, FB, and Myspace will probably always dominate the market, there is no harm in trying to start a new project, learning from your mistakes, and see if your can provide value that those other websites can't.

It's your time and money... my advice is only worth the years and money I've already invested into knowing when a project is bad idea...

Social Networks are a thing of the past? People are sick of facebook and MySpace? That is crazy talk. You guys really need to do some research. Social Networking is booming still. Facebook is the most popular website in the world it has over 400 Million active member and recieves over 150million unique visitors per month. Twitter has over 100 Million profiles. 59% of the worlds population has a profile on one of the social networks. 43% of the US popualtion has a profile on Facebook. Watch what you say especially if you are crapping on someones ambition . A real waste of time would be to listen to that advice when it is coming from an uninformed, uneducated view.

Sorry if my tone seems a bit aholish but you just touched upon 2 of my biggest pet peves 1) negativity 2) ignorance

Your young and you have time. It wont be easy but just keep pushing and promoting. If you have a real good concept you can explore crowdsource fund raising sites it seems like you have a great spirit and more intlligence than most people I come across. Keep pushing kid you'll make it. Get in touch with me if you need anything Ill point you in the right direction.

Ummm... all I can say is that Google is the #1 website in the world... Facebook is actually 5th... opps there's the ignorance jumping off the page... guess I forgot to do my research... wait that was you. Experience based advice is only considered negative when the listener is to ignorant to listen.

The fact that you are young is not to your advantage here.. It is a hindrance.. your expectations are not based on factual accomplishments at this point. I'd rather see you start a blog for now so that you can learn the ins and outs of internet marketing. Social Networks are expensive to start (very expensive if you want a decent one) and they take a lot of money to market (millions if you expect any real results). They are a dead start-up as the market is saturated.

If you are so energetic take some time to come up with something new... Twitter for example is not a social network like FB and MS... it was something new... that's where the opportunity lies.

In order to break into the web, you need to come up with something totally new...which can be hard to do.

Now of course if you can create a new twist to Social Networking, then you could break into that arena. There was Friendster, then MySpace and now Facebook. Each added something new which allowed it to become the next big hit. If you could figure out the next big thing that people would want, then people would slowly gravitate to that. Right now Facebook is extremely popular, although people are not excited about their privacy issue...why? Because everyones on Facebook. Why join a social networking site when everyone is on Facebook.

    update

Hey, sorry I didn't read this for a while.

Thought I'd update you guys, I emailed my local newspaper and they did a story.. pretty cool! The story is attached to email.

Anyway, I agree with you guys on how saturated the social network market is. Innovation is really important. I have 110% belief in my idea, and I know it can be a success simply because I am a typical high school student creating a site aimed towards high school students.

Have you guys tried any good paid PR sites? Or is it worth sticking with the free ones?

    Thanks,
    Nick.

After reading this thread I can only agree with rogercbryan.

Social Networks are out of date, the idea is so 2003 or even earlier. Twitter is a completely different thing, more about gossip and the hunger for instant news.

Entrepreneurs need to solve problems for people in new and innovative ways. A social networking site is by no means in demand right now, the market is overly saturated.

On the other hand, that does not mean a social networking site isn't a great starting point. But it needs more than a new Facebook to truly achieve something in that area.

The only real way for a new social networking site to work is if it is an extremely targeted niche. You can make a broad spectrum like..social networking stie for gamers, and expect it to go anywhere.
