    STEP 1: Love it!
Online video marketing is here to stay and has the potential to seriously improve the strength of your brand and increase sales.

    STEP 2: Learn it
This is a new and evolving field so you need to stay on top of what’s going on or hire someone to do it for you.

If you are looking to have someone do it for you my somewhat biased opinion would be to set up a free introductory meeting with the specialists here at Engine 8 if you are in the GTA or another local expert if you live elsewhere (even then you could call or email us!)

When you do meet with us (or whoever) be sure to ask questions: What is possible? What is working? What hasn’t worked?

If you want to learn more about online video on your own, the internet has many valuable resources including my personal favourite

    STEP 3: Budget it
Sometimes you need to spend money to make money and that is especially true when starting your online video marketing campaign.

Be sure you allocate enough resources to broadcast your message to as many of the right viewers as possible. This can be done via blog and publication outreach, social network marketing and paid placement on highly targeted online publication and social networking sites.

Eventually you will go from paid to earned views and conversations. This can take some patience but rest assured once you have reached enough viewers the campaign will promote itself via shares, word of mouth, etc.

    STEP 4: Create it
People hate boring advertisements so make sure that you develop creative concepts that will be interesting and shareable and keep the ‘selling’ as subtle as possible.

    STEP 5: Quantify it
Establish a desired ROI before developing your campaign and then come up with tactics to get you there.

    STEP 6: Integrate It
You should integrate your video and social media campaigns into your TV, print, radio, outdoor and PR initiatives to engage an expanded audience. Sometimes we forget that the now-seminal “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” Old Spice Guy started as a TV ad. Also, identify which internal teams you could be working closely with on the launch and follow-through of your campaigns. Social media marketing relies on the spread of information so the more channels you can have working for you the further your campaign reach will be. In addition, you may be able to share the creative, production and viral marketing costs with other departments and create content that can be used for multiple purposes.

    STEP 7: Experiment it
When you decide to get started, be sure to try different approaches and learn from your mistakes. If something doesn’t work don’t be discouraged, a lot of factors have to come together including content, timing, allocated budget, viral strategy, etc and it takes time to master them all.

    STEP 8: React to it
The purpose of starting your video campaign is to elicit a reaction. The reaction from the public must be monitored closely or it could result in negative gains.

    STEP 9: Lead it
The biggest gains are made by concepts that innovate. Minimize risk to be sure but always ask the question of what you can do to stand out from your competitors.

    STEP 10: Push it
As with any creative endeavor, the impression your campaign leaves on the public can be hard to determine. However by working with trained professionals you will certainly increase the chances that the results will be positive and that your business will grow as a result.
