Whats the best way to get press for a new startup

I will be launching a new online startup over the coming months. Whats the best way for a small startup with limited funds to get press coverage?

Write an article, send it to your local paper/relevent trade/industry magazine/website and hope they print/publish it when they're stuck for stuff to use?

Helps if your business has some meaning to your target market or your business has some unique feature that will create a buzz. Its also possible for you as the business owner, if you have some past event in your life that makes your story remarkable or different from others, to gain some press coverage on that basis.

    Hire Some Nudists

Hire some nudists and paint your company logo on their bodies and have them march in front of the local church in your town. I'm sure the press will show up.....but I guess you probably wanted positive press-huh?

Oh well......back to the drawing board.

Who was it who said "all publicity is good publicity"?

To be honest it would help if we knew what your online venture involves, feint.

Everyone says they are unique but they're doing the same 'ol same 'ol. I like articles, they're good for spotty but longterm exposure. I like twitter too but you have to have to know the code in order to be at the top. I would suggest waiting to ask for advice until the launch. Asking for advice without telling us what the startup is doesn't make any sense.

Ok, I thought I would ask this question to get some general ideas and start some conversation - it turns out the YE forum is quite hostile. I have launched a startup before and it was successfully acquired. So i may as well contribute some knowledge if no-one else will!

Here is how I have got press in the past:
    • Twitter - I have lots of followers who are all interested in similar things to me. This always drives a lot of traffic to my projects
    • Contact with Journos - I have written for lots of blogs and been in contact with journalists and bloggers. I keep a list of these guys handy so I can email through a personal email explaining my new startup
    • Blog - About 2 weeks out from the launch, I start writing the product blog. I keep it fresh and updated and invite my developers and customer support to write on it too
    • Press Release - even though the press release is dead for startups, I still create one and send it out. It does help with search engine rankings
    • Review Blogs - I send out personalized emails to the authors of popular startup review blogs, often before launch ot offer a sneak peak

lol I wasn't hostile at all. If you were too vague, you were too vague. Now that you've updated with tips, I've got a better idea of what you're asking.

I really like the review blogs idea and keeping in contact with journalists. How easy is it to get them to communicate with you?

Believe it or not, I love love love using private label products. I'm getting stickers printed for my private label 100% USDA organic beef jerky. I want to bring attention to the blatent jerks on a particular website and the lack of involvement by site owners.

I'm a huge foodie so I try to combine things that I enjoy. I would consider sending private label hot sauce with website name and logo to top 20 chef schools to get student to come to my site for job postings, camaraderie, or even recalled food. I just like interaction.

    Hope this help,

    Em

Its not hard to get journos to communicate with you if have a visible and strong personal brand online. In my industry I have to be everywhere - social networks, blogs, forums etc. - this is where the journos hang out.

Would have never thought of this. Even better if you're in a metro city and can get a local journalist. It bridges the communication gap when you can discuss hot topics over lunch. Brilliant!
