identifying who your marketing too will help you figure out where to find your "quality" traffic. social media outlets all drive certain amounts of traffic, as do blogs, forums, and decent se rankings. I think seo will generate more long term traffic than anything, but a lot has to do with your industry, and what keywords you're targeting. ppc works well for driving general hits, but in my experience, the roi is fairly low, and ppc fraud is something that does exist, but can't really be proven. in 2006 i spent just under 28k in google adwords, which only returned about a 35% net roi. not that great in my book for the amount spent. If you're a retailer, offering monthly or weekly drawings to give away free merchandise pulls a decent amount of traffic, and your links will get passed around fairly easily. The more frequent the drawings, the more often people will return. But above all, providing content that people are interested in, whether it be products, services, blog copy, etc.. will get your links passed on more than any other factor. Even in the computer age, word of mouth is still the best advertising you can get. "And the cheapest"

If your selling a product or service and you can key in on the problems of the target audience and then write about it in forums, blogs, posts and articles then your target audience will want to seek you out for the answers to their problems. The easies way is to find the problems, get the answers to their problems, from experts and industry information then give the information to your target audience. Become trustworthy and credible and they will want more from you as you have the answers they need. In this day and age of overpromising websites and promotion. Give them what they, your target audience, want and need to succeed.

I agree forum posting is important. I also get plenty of traffic from business cards I give to random people I meet or get introduced to (about 5 a month).

I also plan on getting a facebook fan page created once I re-design my website.

Natural Search results are best. Get your content right than buy in high quantity of links. Not pretty but it works.
Alternative method is copy the links of your comeptitors. use the yahoo search linkdomain:your competitors URL and than work through the list to see where they have linked and request to link as well. This should help in finding useful links.
Just remember you need 3x more links than show in Yahoo as they dont all appear.
