ways to get traffice to your site
Hi

I'm almost done with my e-commerce site and I was wondering what are some effective ways to get traffics to your site. I was looking at Pay-per-click, SEO, trade links, etc. How does each one work and which one would be the most cost -effective way?

Thanks

First, have healthy content (pleanty of good text) and SEO on your website. I think one of the best counters to have on your web pages is statcounter.com. Between that and google's keyword rankings you can see what keywords are bringing people to your site.

Since you are willing to pay for traffic, I will assume your website is commercial. Are the keywords that are bringing people to your site paying off? Are those keywords all bought up in google adwords? If not, I buy them. I stay away from keywords that a lot of people are already buying.

There isn't such kind of thing that unified cost effective way to get traffic. Your site should be profitable, so if you will get 1000 visitors with no sale, 10 visitors with one sale is much better traffic than 1000 visitors. Using PPC, you can estimate your ROI better than doing SEO or using social networking sites. SEO can be also more time consuming, than PPC.
profitable models that I'm working or consulting are few hundred visitors per day having sales ratio of 3%-5%.

You can also start with google adwords with may be 0.25 per keyword and $5/day limit.
Google will also suggest keyword that you can try.
You can also start link building.

Internet marketing 101.

There are 2 ways to get traffic:

1. Buy it.
2. Organically achieve it.

When you are launching a new product or website you can simply BUY some traffic from many of available sources (google, etc) and see what kind of conversion ratios you get and see if you generate MORE in sales than what you SPENT on the traffic.

If you make a profit - or if there is profit potentially from recurring customers then you can continue to BUY traffic from as many different sources as possible.

The other way to get traffic is organically achieve it. There are a few ways to do this: search engines, link trades, social networking, offline marketing, and a few others but really MOST of the traffic comes from the search engines - I mean that is where you are probably BUYING the traffic in the above paragprah from in the first place.

So getting traffic from the search engines organically is the other way to do it - I am not going to go into how it is done because it has been written on a million websites, a million times before, and I charge people to teach them, I have for years.

So. Gaining the traffic organically from the search engines does not cost you any money, it only costs you time, but the effects are permanent and as a result you build yourself a residual amount of traffic which is ultimately money, and it can grow and grow and grow blah blah blah sky is the limit pretty much. Noobies should start with PPC and see how that goes - see if anyone wants to buy what you got in the first place.

depending on what you are selling and what your margins are, you should look to engage a professional search engine marketing firm or a consultant.

SEO/SEM can make or break an online business (of course you need a good product/service, customer service, etc. as well)

If your semi-techie you can check out my 3 hour seminar on SEO...if you do please let me know what you think (GRIN)

Is your site dynamic or does it have static Search Engine Friendly URLs?

In order to increase the traffic there are many methods. There are paid as well as free service sites, that can be usefuyl based on convenience and type of business. Usually in free sites it takes time to get approved for the site and the link may not be placed permanently in their site. For paid services these are not applicable.

For me, SEO is very effective. Try to use keyword discovery or google adwords to analyze a good and targeted keywords, then use it to promote your site. You can submit also to directory to gain backlinks.
