Types of traffic?

This is a question for you all. One of the projects I’m working on is a traffic generation site. My site is coded a little different then most of these sites. My site drives real traffic not just views. The question that I have is; Has anyone ever categorized traffic (in a marketing sense)?

I’m looking to see if there is any consideration or value to the following.

1- Directed Traffic: This is real traffic that is created with the intent to sell a product or service. This type of traffic is generated in many different manners and its success is measured in the quality of the lead. <very basic definition>

2- Generic Traffic: This is traffic that is created or directed to a site simply for the purpose of increasing page ranking, search engine placement, and Alexa Rankings. This kind of traffic is transparent when reviewed by an analytics program. There is no intent to hide this type of traffic. Nor is this traffic used to try and manipulate affiliate programs. This traffic generated little or no quality leads.

Is there a need for Generic Traffic? If used correctly (ethically) is there any value to generic traffic? If it can be purchased cheaply would users from YE want generic traffic?

Below from:
What Are Different Types of Search Engines Traffic?

When I searched for internet traffic types this is all I found.

Organic Traffic: This is the traffic from the results displayed by search engine naturally, depending upon the relevancy. These results are called Organic or Natural Results. They are based on natural algorithm of it and are influenced by that only. If your site comes in top listings, you get tons of free traffic. Search engine optimization is the specialty that explores how a page can rank high for organic search results.

Paid Search Traffic: Most of the search engines also show a sponsored listing along with organic results, either at top or in side. Your position would depend on your bidding in your pay per click campaign and competition on your keyword. Your bidding guarantees you a display when the search term you have bid upon is entered. This method does not take relevancy in account and the results are solely guided by search term. Another method of paid search traffic is to pay for inclusion in an index so that your web site is displayed along with other relevant sites. However, this method only guarantees inclusion and not listing. That would still depend on relevancy of search term. Many small search engines run this kind of paid inclusion.

The most valuable traffic is the one generated by the target audience of the product or service sold. However there is need of generic traffic due to the requirements of better position in the search engines. That is why generic traffic will have its customers just at a lower price.

I would definitely break down the categories or even make a new category to get more specific with the definitions.

Like Real said, you're going to have incomings "referrals" for different reasons, and I think the sheer education of the end consumer about why there are is a value, not to mention more LSI power

All in all, I like where you're going with these new naming conventions, I'd just hate to see an end user get lost in those categories due to lack of "drill down". Cheers and good luck with the new site - I'm certain there is value there!

PS. When you get the site done, postin the review my site thread so we can all give feedback (I think that will help you with "would YE users want generic traffic?").
