I think social bookmarking is amazing, have you seen how many hits Digg gets a month, imagine the traffic to your site if you can get an article up there.

I have been using the "Addthis.com" button on my blog.

I made it to the homepage of Digg a while back and I have to tell you that it's not all it's cracked up to be immediately. I received massive traffic that subsequently crashed my server. Most of the traffic that clicked through from Digg stayed on the site a whopping 10 seconds and then clicked the back button to Digg.

The actual traffic you get from digg is what I call "peek traffic" They click through, peek, and then go back to digg.

The one benefit that did come out of it though is that the page that made it to digg was for a cool widget that could be put on myspace pages, blogs, and other sites. In turn this created hundreds of new backlinks to the site and did give some pretty powerful SEO value months down the road.

Getting to the homepage of digg is good, but most of the time it will not make a huge difference in your revenue.

Working social bookmarking sites is all about the backlinks.

Go for sites that don't have a redirect or nofollow tag so you can get linkjuice to your site.

It will help you increase your SERPs.

This is such a great point man. So many of the social bookmarking sites do you use the no follow attribute. While you can still get decent traffic from these sites, they will provide no direct search engine value.

Social Bookmarking is extremely effective, and it is not just individuals trying to promote their own sites, although there is a lot there.

I suggest trying to promote your users to use stumbleupon- it's much easier to "thumb up" an article than it is to digg it because it's integrated into the browser and only takes one click. There are plugins / coding you can use that will automatically place a message somewhere ("Like this article? Don't forget to thumb it up!") if it recognizes that the browser being used has the stumbleupon bar installed onto it.

Stumbleupon is a great site. If your site gets stumbled you get a huge amount of traffic in one swoop.

Like other social bookmarking sites though this traffic is generally peek and go, but if you can keep a few people returning then I think it is worth it.

I agree with you. Digg is one of the most popular social bookmarking sites.

If you have unique story and you will get space on homepage of Digg, you will get tremendous traffic.
