You get the word out anyway that you legally can, be it blogs, business cards, forums, affiliate programs, newspapers, word of mouth, etc......

In addition just like others have already said it, I'd like to add a few more options how to market your website :

1) Articles
2) Press releases
3) Press release distribution services
4) Keywording (but Google does not rank your page nowdays with keywords) it ranks your page depending on traffic to your website.
5) Direct mail (with your website's address)
6) Forums
7) Advertising (yellow pages, outdoor advertising, special promotions)
8) Professional organizations such as your local chamber of commerce is a good place to network and make connections

The most important aspect of optimizing your site for the Googlebot is the effective use of keywords and keyword phrases.

Yes, the keyword meta tag does not mean much these days.

Google uses a complex algorithm to rank your site. With high Page Ranking, relevant inbound links being of primary importance.

Alexa, not Google ranks your site according to traffic. Alexa is not very accurate and you shouldnt concern yourself too much with it.

Yes, there are many good Search Engine Optimization resources on the net.

But i most definitely disagree with point 4 above. I have summarized the most important aspects of Search Engine Optimization in my sig... (a basic intro for beginners).

If you are going to make statements like the one above then please back them up with evidence from a reputable resource. We don't want to be sending people off on the wrong track.
