    Cool

It will depends on your goal, your offerings, your customers & your marketing plans & strategies..

You can ask if distributing fliers, doing TV ads are effective & I will give the same comment..

There is NO singular method that is effective for any business, even in the same trade, industry & environment..
There are too many variables in business to consider..

    That, I guarantee you personally..

What you can focus in is maybe on your goals, your offerings, your customers, your marketing plan, your trade, your industry, your enivronment & then you select the strategies that work on your bottomline..

& also define what you mean by "effective"..
    That's one of the variables..

I hope my sharing had added some value to you..

If you're talking about buying "opt in" emails, the response will ary widely from list to list. Make sure the list is not "incentivized" or "co-reg" leads. These are the cheapest but least effective. You can get great response if you have the right demographic, but make sure the list owner allows you to test small.

If you're talking about building your own list, one of the biggest advantages your own opt in email list has is it allows you to "own the advertising channel." What this means is once you capture their email address, you can market to them for no cost (except for auto-responder service, and the time to construct emails). Of course, you must market the right way, but it is absolutely effect if done the right way.

A couple of tips that are common mistakes amongst my clients when they build their own list:
    1. They don't research their market enough, and don't provide enough of an enticement for people to opt in. (Then they say it doesn't work.)
    2. They set up a great landing page and get lots of opt ins, but have no plan on the back end to market to them.

And I agree with everything in the post above.

    Hope this helps.

Here is a good article on how effective opt in email is.

As 'rpfirehawk' said, you can build your own email list. You can take a help of company directory to build a list.
