I consider SEO as the basis for my online marketing strategy, I use adwords when in areas where i can't get good SERPS through optimization. Make sure to have a database and communicate with it effectively... dont spam them.

I think adsense is the one you put google ads on your pages.

Matthaus, adwords are useful for certain site/campaign and total rubbish on the other. I once spend US$4000 over on adwords for my clients, yet the result are not very promising. Once I spend just US$200 for my client sign-up links, the result are great! They got 160 over sign-up, with 65% active members.

The tips:

Good with adwords.
If you are not selling anything.
You reward the sign up.
Free stuf inside
Information/news website.
Beta version website. (internet user are always eager to be the 1st one)

Don't even think about adwords:
Online shopping
e-commerce
Targeting foreigner at your site.
Paid sign-up.

Also ads on classified site/ yellow pages could work nice implementing few offline marketing techniques as well.

Email to 1 Million consumers and see what happens!

'Everyone', oh the un-identifyabe 'everyone', is down on email marketing, they why is it still arround, it's affordable, VERY affordable, and it works. Work with a consultant and company who understands email marketing and you'll see to it's worth the effort with each campaign!
