    Meeting with logo artist tonight!

My business partner and I are meeting a very high end artist who has created logos for big time companies we all know. I have a mutual friend who go us the meeting. We are a small start up company and this is our real first meeting that has to do with the company. Our logo is our company, our name, our product! I know he'll do a great job, that I can count on. I need tips on what to talk about with someone at this caliber. What questions. What goes into logos etc.? Please advise. : )

    Don't over-invest in your logo!

    Hello mommijessie,

I want to warn you - in the strongest possible terms - NOT to over-invest too much time, energy or (most importantly) money in developing a logo for your business.

Why? It's not going to make people pull out their wallets and purchase from you.

Example: Did you know that the Nike "Swoosh" logo cost only $35? And that they picked it because it was the best available option and they had to go to print?

The swoosh is arguably one of the top 5 most recognized logos in the world... but it's what Nike did as a company that infused the logo with meaning - not the other way around.

You can get tons of high quality graphic designers to compete for your logo business at a website called 99 designs (search on google) for just a few hundred dollars. For less than $1000 you can also get a quality website design included.

Spend your money on what is truly important - developing and implementing a highly targeted marketing campaign. Spend the money on hiring a good copywriter. Spend the money on hiring a results oriented sales person who will go out and add to your bottom line results.

Is a logo important? Sure. It conveys your style, energy and can instill confidence in your potential customer. But the difference between a $300 - $500 logo and a $5000 logo is slim to none.

The logo is far more complex than it seems. Paul is right, your logo is a small thing, but on the other hand changing a logo is challenging and demanding and you'll want to avoid it too. ...make your logo versitale enough to put it everywhere you want it. If you need it in a neon sign, it'll have to be simple. If you need it seen at a distance and to be recognizable? Will you ever need it to be printed in black and white?

...on a more practical matter you have by now set your target market, the problem you solve, and how your different from your competition. What elements of that (ex. brand colors speaking to males, females, or both) are and are not in the the logo? Can he stick to a budget, and what happens if you don't like the logo? How much is your budget etc?

    I envy you not.

Please post the logo when it is done. It is a great feeling when you go on your first few meeting of real, legitimate company.

Agree that a logo is important but with limited budget, it's better to use wisely.... Nike logo costs $35 ? Interesting!
