What are some of the best ways to get customers to find your local service?

I recently had a client that wanted to target a local market. We optimized his site for local keywords and he was soon number 1 and 2 on Google for his three primary local keywords.

add local content to the website
get links to the website that include the local name -- i.e. Dallas Hookers - if you were trying to optimize for hookers in Dallas.
make sure your internal link structure includes the local name in some key links. Back to the home page would be great if the service is strictly local.
content rich articles with the local name in them, link on the locality.

Get listed on Google Local and Yahoo Local.
Do locally optimized SEO.
Set up a Google AdWords campaign for your local market.
Networking...with people not computers :-)
Depending on the service you could speak at the local Chamber of Commerce etc
Leads groups can also be very effective
