Is Marketing and Selling are different?

Is marketing and selling are different or one? How do you differentiate once you close the deal? How do you know which effort sold the product?

    Looking for your thoughts.

Marketing and selling ( in other words sales), well both are not different but both are not same either. marketing is a very broad term. sales or selling is a part of marketing. The Good marketing campaign results in lead generation and ultimately sales. Sales comes almost at the final stages of the marketing process. marketing starts with identifying a need, then involves various processes, like offering a product which can meet the need ,to promotion, distribution, sales, after service, feed back. In short business is marketing and sales is one of the objectives of marketing.

Although there are differences based on your industry, essentially marketing gets the phone to ring, and sales picks it up.

Marketing and Selling are interconnected. When you want to sell a product, you market them to people. Marketing means thinking of ways to motivate a potential client to actually buy your product.

Hi there BizDoc, that is a short and simple explanation that hits the question right on the head. For some businesses though, small companies like us, the distinction gets blurred. And I think that there are advantages to having these two combined. This is the reason why account managers are better than sales or marketing people.
