Internet directories & other free marketing methods

Hi!

What are your experiences about internet directories?

Have they been successful in bringing traffic to your site?
Have they affected your Google page rank?

I only submit to those with a high PR. I don't rely on directory submission to bring traffic to my site, I rather do good seo, good keywords and promote it.

Directories haven't done much for traffic of my sites. Better if you can concentrate on 'hubs' that are authoritative in your specific industry and try to get them to link to you.
That and just quality content and good search-engine-friendly but not keyword-stuffed headlines.

You won't get any traffic from directories unless you buy featured links. However they can be effective in bringing up your page rank and search engine rankings. Make sure you don't choose directories based off the page rank of the home page; you need to look at the page rank of the actual page that your link will appear on. If you can find any directory that has any page rank at all on the actual page that your link will appear on than you should definetely submit but those are rare.

Try Wikicommerce.org! It's a wiki-based site you can add articles about your business for free. I bet it's more effective than 10 link directory submissions.

fwn122 is right, you will have to look that the pagerank of the page where your link will be if you're considering page ranking.

Directories are not that useful when it comes to traffic, but every backlink helps in SEO so there is a point in submitting your sites to as many as possible.

You might get an average of two or three unique visitors per month for each directory you submit to. If you're a new website with no pagerank nobody will want to exchange links with you so this is one way to get backlinks. Make sure you find a list of "free" directories so you won't have to sort through what's paid and what's not. Also, change your description every 20 or 30 submissions and don't use automatic software to try to cut corners. Some websites will detect the software and your submission will be useless.
