It really depends on what your company is trying to sell. Adwords is great to test the water because you can recieve traffic instantly. SEO is another good play because the rewards can last a long time if done well. I would avoid old school media and stick to new school media. Seo, social networking, adwords etc..

What if I am into a small store selling inexpensive soup noodles to a localized neighbourhood of about 50000 average income people, in a eating place?

Seriously wiil internet marketing, SEO, social media etc bring in the profits for this business?

I really love the way how businesses can leverage on the internet for their marketing..
I also figure that not all businesses can use the internet to market for them ya..
& internet marketing is only ONE strategy out of a few hundreds other marketing strategies available..
There is really no inferior or superior, old or new school media, only profitable ones with respect to the business itself..
It is how we analyse each unique business & create a profitable marketing system & foundation to bring in the profits..

Inle - If I could comment on your post,...

I'm sure your statement here is a "what if" but, If you have a store and you are specializing in selling items to local homes / restaurants, You could in fact try some "New School" methods.

As you mentioned: "There is really no inferior or superior, old or new school media, only profitable ones with respect to the business itself."

I would like to point out - Social Media is changing everyday. Each day is an introduction to "New School" methods. Years ago, MySpace was a great way to promote your business, then it was Facebook and now Twitter and YouTube. My example is trying to explain that there are new "Hot Sites" every time we wake up each day. Which creates "New School" methods of advertising.

As far as your Soup Noodle idea. In todays world, why limit yourself to offering your product to a local place only? Do you NOT think your noodles will be appreciated and enjoyed by millions of people all over? What makes your noodles better than the "other" noodle companies? Let the world know and MAYBE - You can sell you product across country/world!!

I apologize if I read your statement wrong but, We need to let small, medium and large business owners that Social Media is the new age of marketing. No matter the size of business or the product, you can broadcast your business and products to millions of people and make a few "extra" dollars while doing it. Did I forget to mention that by using social media, your "Advertising Cost" is significantly lower than traditional or "Old School" ways of marketing?

By the way - I just did a Google search for "soup noodles". I found over 4,640,000 items. Also, next to NO AdWords for this search. You could in fact, have your AdWords campaign and get viewed on the first pages of Google.

That's my Marketing Opinion. Hope it makes some sense and maybe helps you or the other Noodle Company with their next marketing campaign lol.

Truthfully you can attract millions of hits a month for free online. I 'd save your money, and do some real research online, and go to school on the Internet and learn how it's really done.

yes, definitely internet is a way to go as far as marketing goes. I would actually save that 5 thousand dollars and just keep it for myself, and spend 0 dollars on the internet and just market using free social networking tools that so many companies are offering. it is really what and how you market with the amount of money is what matters, just like what inle said. but again, it really depends on what business you are trying to market.

Facebook is good because it's so easy to reach the people you are interested in. If it was a local business you can only advertise to the people in a certain radius. I think it's good as it's going to attract people and not waste your money.

I suggest you do your market research first to know where you targeted customers are.

I've tested with social media with some products, it does not work there all the time cos the market might just be offline.

Hence your research work is very important before spending a dime on marketing.

    So for example.

If you happen to find out that your market is actually the Greying Population, then online strategies might not work cos a large part of this generation may not know how to use computers at all. So you have to know where they hang out and what kind of advertisements they used to receive.

In this case telemarketing or direct letters might be better.

There are definitely some interesting responses on this thread, so I'll add mine to the mix.

With $5,000 I would likely recommend just about any company rent a proven list from a good broker and do a direct mail piece to a targeted list of proven buyers with a killer offer.

If a client were nervous or unwilling to do direct mail, I would shift the strategy to a well-thought-out PPC campaign, likely with Adwords, leading again to a direct response offer online.

Targeting your specific customer directly and getting a measurable result is key with any marketing campaign, which is why I would definitely recommend away from "bulk advertising" like newspaper ads, at least until there was a proven offer in place.

I wouldn't need $5,000 for marketing/wouldn't be able to use that amount without severely overloading my company with clients.

Give me about $1000 and I'd branch out with targeted Facebook ads, classified ads in small local business newspapers/magazines and a little money to facilitate the building of my blog with keyword specific articles.

From the new clients gained here I would have months and months of referral business to handle as well.

After the referrals and referrals of referrals and so on are worked out my company and brand would be well established as the local go to company and people would be coming to me instead of me having to reach out to them.
