How would you handle this marketing challenge?

If you had to promote a webseries and make a solid presence in a month and half without any budget, what would be your steps? How would you go about this? How much time would set aside for just research?

When you refer to a web series are you referring to a TV series, video series, audio series? I have 25 years in video production and 11 in TV production.

I don't know the details of your webseries but with no budget I would write articles on content related to your webseries and direct your readers either straight to the webseries if you need immediate visitors or to a lead capture page to capture their information first. Then you could follow up with them to get them even more in your series.
Also if you have clips you can provide from your webseries to build awareness I would submit those videos to video sites such as youtube with a link to your site. Doing this will give viewers a glimpse of what they can expect and then they will already be interested when they get to your site!

Just a few suggestions...I hope this helps!

Those are great ideas but without traffic to look at those articles or video clips I am no farther ahead. I guess I'm looking for the age old question and that it how do I fire that first spark that will get a mass amount of people interested? I am more interested in how people would initially approach this.
For me I got on related forums, started relationships with stores that related to the webseries, and started a high school contest.

What else could I be doing? What am I missing?

That's why they have YouTube! I am assuming here you have video content ready for upload.

You can start or I should say test waters first by just posting a teaser on youtube followed by the first episode. There are lot of comedians out there doing this, i don't see a reason why it wouldn't work for you.

Second step would be to go after bloggers, they are the best buzz creaters. Tell them that you would obviously plug their blog on your website where you are hosting your web series for a positive review.

Third, a press release. There are few free press release websites out there but don't expect much from it as only the ones that cost $$ work really well and get your news across the media.

Just my 2 cents, hope I helped !

Interesting,

The only way to drive traffic is to start promoting it, and the easiest and least costly way is through free press release sites which will put you on search listings under your catagory, whatever that is. So make sure you have your proper and most effective key words in title of press release. This is the quickest way to get on search engines and I have used them effectively for years.

Good luck, Mike
