How to sell a marketing idea for an existing product?

I have a new way to market an existing product. How does one go about selling this idea to the major corporation that makes this product? Is this even possible? I know they would listen to my suggestion but I would like to be compensated for it as it could increase their sales quite dramatically.

I see that being very tough without being a marketing/advertising firm.

I remember reading about a legal case with a marketing firm and Taco Bell. I believe with proper documentation, you can cover yourself from having them steal your idea.

The issue is, if it is a big company, you pitch your idea, and they steal it, the only thing you can do is sue them. In that case, you will incur a lot of legal fees, and have no guarantee of winning.
