I got your PM. What kind of marketing are you wanting to do with the site? Do you just want to generate more word-of mouth?

If so, before you start sending out the link, I would recommend you finish posting content to all parts of the site and verify that all the links are working. People won't return if they don't think the full page is up and running.

I guess the big question I have then is...what exactly is on your site? Are you trying to build a community?

You have the blog/forums/shop/news/videos but not a lot of content. If you are just trying to create a general, all-purpose community site, you have a lot of competition. If there is some theme or niche that you are trying to fill, it would help to start focusing in on it with your site. A portal for a particular topic/country/hobby/etc would be useful and easier to market that just a general site featuring all the various options you have. It might be too much, too soon if you don't have the content to fill the pages.

I would say your first step for generating traffic is getting text up on the site. Fill every page with content, get friends in the forum and start posting to your blog (with a custom theme matching your site if possible). These things will 1) make your site look more professional and content-heavy and 2) get your site in more search results.

Start there and find your theme or focus.

The idea for the site is all in one like yahoo. Content for the site should be up soon as well as new things. Maybe you can sign up to the forums.

One like Yahoo? That's a big bite to chew.

Alright, first thing, as chuff1026 said, you need to get the site fixed. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for you to have content on every part of the site and flesh it all out to make it deep.

You might try to remove some of the site. For example, drop the forums or the blog until you have enough content to support it. You can add features like this back as you grow the site. For now, you might try just working on the store and the forums. You could remove the videos and news sections of the site. Once the forums get fleshed out, add the blog and incorporate it into the News section of the site. Once you get enough video content, add a videos section (maybe as a spinoff of the blog as well).

I think what we are all seeing and saying here is that you are doing too much too soon. You can't market this site with nothing on the homepage and most of the links going to empty pages. It's like trying to sell an empty box.

As for trying to steal traffic from Yahoo. That's a big task. Almost impossible. Microsoft and Google are doing it, but it is hard for a small competitor to make any sort of mark without some competitive advantage, which I don't see on your site. You might consider targeting a specific country or hobby as a portal. Yahoo is a pretty general site and draws traffic because of it's content and search function. Maybe you could find a focus somewhere that would really help you out.

See what you can do with the site and get a plan together. When the site looks ready to go, then you should market it.

More content/articles would be good, in addition to some better Search Engine Optimization efforts. I'd hire an internet marketing guru... it'd definitely be worth it because your site is great!
