    Google Page Rank

    Hi,

Could someone please explain something to me. My website which i launchedabout a year ago had a google rank of 2. I know your thinking 2 out of 10 is not that impressive, but the best known rival sie only has 5 so i thought i'd be there in no time. I keep my eyes on the rank to see when we make the step up to 3 so that i could party non stop for a weekend to celebrate. However yesterday i noticed we'd fallen bak to a rank of 1!!!

I don't understand. The content has improved and grown on the site. We have more inwards links. We are getting more unique visitors. What could have gone wrong?

    Thanks in advance

How are the quality of your links? Are your links growing a rapidly or creating a synthetic graph?

RLorenzen, thanks for the reply. If you mean by the quality of my links, are they related sites then yes they are pretty good. I haven't added that many though, just gradual growth.

Not too sure what you mean by "creating a synthetic graph". Could you explain please?

    Cheers

By quality I mean sites that are relevant to your site and have good page ranking. Google penalizes sites that have many backlinks from poor quality sites.

Google watches to make sure your links are growing "naturally". What this means is if Google sees you getting many backlinks everyday, constantly, they will view this as "link spamming" and penalize your site. For instance, if you are gaining 200 links per day, every single day and a link trending chart for your site shows a constant, rapid up trend, Google will consider you to be link spamming and penalize you accordingly. It is better to get 10 links one day, wait a day or so, get 5 links after that, pause for 2 days, get another 10-15 links after that, pause again and so on. This is natural link growth and this is what Google wants.

So, you do not think it is a problem with your link quality or link growth rate?

This google page rank thing is just a bit strange to me. When I realised that my new sites were heading straight to pr3's and pr4's and my older sites were losing pr, I stopped even bothering with it. To me it's just like alexa rank. It's there but I don't need it.

I prefer being ranked high on the search engines and pr has nothing to do with this.

I believe google Page Ranking is partly based on other websites. Even if your website improves, if comparable websites improve also, you won't see much change in Page Ranking. So to notice major changes you need to make sure that your improvements are greater than your competitors.

    Cheers all for your responses.

The website thing is very new to me. I've run a couple of business before but this is the first time i've ever had a web based business. So all the advice is much appreciated.

RLorenzen. You talk about getting 10 to 15 links one day then having afew days off and then getting another 5 to 10 a few days later. How do you go about getting these links? I've been emailing companies that are related to mine (building companies) offering them a reciprocal link and also ofering to profile their business on our website. Even though our site is bigger and has more viewers we still only seem to get the occasional company reply. Are there any tricks to getting reciprocal that you could share with me?

    Thanks

First off, the PageRank is something that you should not even bother with. I have friends that have a PageRank 5 site that gets 100 times more traffic than their PageRank 7 sites. This is because of better content and a more naturaly link profile.

Building links naturally will not necessarily raise your PageRank. Some sites Hoard their PageRank by accumulating a bunch of low quality links. This raises their PageRank. It is unnatural, yet it still does this.

I believe what RLorenzen is referring to is TrustRank. This is done by building a natural link profile.

With PageRank being so easy to manipulate, Google has designed algorithms to put barely any weight if any, on PageRank. Concentrate on great content for human eyes, and a natural link building campaign as RLorenzen stated.

You mentioned getting reciprocal links. Google also puts less weight on reciprocal links. It is much better to get a backlink (where a site links to you only) Make sure that the site does not have a lower PR than you. This is where Google DOES take PageRank into consideration. I understand how hard it is to have sites link back to you via email and cold calling. Of course you know, and hate to hear i'm sure, but the best way to build links is by publishing GREAT content. You can also do some Social Bookmarking and Article Submission. The best is to have a site unique enough to where it is mentioned on a major blog or RSS Feed. This is worth more than 1,000 article posts.

Hope this helps. IM me if you have any more questions.

My website launched early this year. I had a page rank of 1 (which I was excited about) and only last week Google took a mark off for unkown reasons.

After reading this thread, I feel a lot better that Page Rank isn't everything! Thanks vbcannon and RLorenzen for your responses!

Yeah, you should really look into social bookmarking and article submission.

Social Bookmarking are the little icons you see on the bottom of each one of your posts. To read more on social bookmarking read this thread:

Page 2 - Social Bookmarking - SEO Chat

It should really help you out. Social Bookmarking is a really good tool and should be used to both submit your site and submit other sites that interest you. The difference between regular bookmarking, and bookmarking on, say, your google toolbar, is that on Social Bookmarking you can access your bookmarks anywhere in the world that has internet service and you can share your bookmarks with others.

SocialMarker.com is a very good site to submit to a lot of social bookmarking sites at once (which is what you want).

Artice Submission is also great. Read this page for some great info on it:

    Webmaster Tips

I really believe that the info in this post can take you to new heights as for as backlinks go if you didnt already know the info.

    Best of luck

I think once a month, but not sure if it's the same date every month.
