Question Forum and Viral Marketing?

I'm just wondering..I wanna try something new or niche, so is Viral Marketing suitable to promote a forum? It may sounds ridiculous to make videos of the forum that I'm setting up and then upload it on Youtube..because I've never seen anyone doing it.

BTW, I wanna learn more about other sorts of marketing err..ways. I only knew about "Viral Marketing" yesterday.

Viral marketing is really cool but it can be tough to get it to take off. Do you already have plans for this video you're going to produce and equipment for it and all? How do you plan to start seeding the exposure (meaning getting the first people to view it). What about your video will compel people to share it?

There are loads of ways to market things -- pay per click, placement targeting, email marketing, print advertising, contests, fund raisers. The list is really long. You may find my blog helpful, it's dedicated entirely to marketing.

Viral marketing can be applied to any marketing plan. With that being said forums are one of the hardest web based businesses to get off the ground.

I just finished a book "The New Rules of Marketing and P.R." (I think the book is at home so I don't have the authors name). They said in the book that only 10% of viral marketing plans catch any steam and of those that do only 10% show a high rate of return. They basically said that a successful viral campaign is as much luck as it is skill (1% of viral plans have significant success).

Viral should not be your main focus. It should compliment a well developed marketing plan.

Viral marketing /= forums until forums are well into motion. I've been trying to boost my forums for a few months now and I have to say that while my forums haven't been doing much, the things I've been trying have been working out pretty well. Forum posting on other forums, digging (as well as all major bookmark sites) and I now have a netowkr of blog friends who help each other to cross promote. My traffic has been doing very well, my ads have been starting to actually pay a little, and things are going well, but forums are not doing much.

Forum marketing works really well for me as well as social networking. Forum works well if you have a good signature and take the time to really give good content for others to use.
