Start blogging. Offer a free email if its information based. Also, try google ads. You can set as small of a budget as you want to try it out and if it works, use it more.

What kind of site is it?

Focus on building content and backlinks for long tail keywords related to your site.

Depending upon what your business is, you can find local events such as charities, expos, theme events, etc. and be a sponsor.

For example, my business deals with boating and marine life in a close community, so we sponsor everything from boat shows, fishing derbies, charity walks and city marathons. And many times it is only $50-$100 to get the basic sponsorship.

This will allow your name to at least be on the website and more often than not, some pamphlet/shirt/etc that gets you exposure. Not only that but you can advertise your connection and contribution to the community, as well as make great connections that will see you for more than just a business but rather those people behind it who actively take part in the market they operate in.

    Hope this helps a bit.

The best free traffic, in my opinion, is organic traffic (traffic from search engines results).

Target high demand, low supply key phrases and start a link building campaign. This should help you improve your ranking.

-Agreed, this is another big driver in getting clicks to your site.

For this, unless you have an extremely unique service or business, you may wish to research SEO a little bit on your own to see what you can tweak with, but they do have services out there that will prep your site for SEO.

I would suggest, start blogging, become friends with popular bloggers, use the free online Page Ranking sites, post articles on the free article sites, try to get links on several directorysites, and pay some Google adds.

Lots of good advice here. I blog pretty much only about free and inexpensive marketing ideas so you might find some of the posts helpful. You can view them at Brand Torrent Blog Some of the strategies I write about are mailing lists, blogging, using promos, charitable fund raising as a PR vehicle, etc.

I would try to get involved with web forums that cater to your market, but don't be a spammer.

Like here, I have my link in my profile and an image but thats it. Don't just go posting links to your site. Actually contribute to the community you are in.

I just joined a quotation community and I am already part of fitness related ones. I used theDailyTxt.com as my username for the quotes forum, but don't spam my page. I actually talk about quotes and the like. This way I won't get booted, which spammers should, users might see my name and go to the site especially if they trust me as I become a contributing member, plus, I like to interact on forums anyway.

Try it out, theres nothing to lose.
