Opening New Windows: How Gates Soared to Incredible Heights

Though he never set out to be a millionaire, Gates not only became the world’s first centibillionaire in 1999, but also one of the world’s most respected entrepreneurs for having revolutionized the world of computers and setting new industry standards. “I really had a lot of dreams when I was a kid,” recalls Gates. How did he do manage to turn those dreams into reality?

He Had A Vision: From day one, Gates dreamed of having a personal computer in every home, in every business and in every school. Throughout his career, he never once wavered from this dream. Focusing on software as the means to popularize the PC, Gates built his empire around this central vision and steered clear of all other distractions. And, the vision continues today. “We are not even close to finishing the basic dream of what the PC can be,” he says.

He Had a Solid Team: “If we weren’t still hiring great people and pushing ahead at full speed, it would be easy to fall behind and become a mediocre company,” says Gates. From Microsoft’s inception, Gates prioritized his team, bringing in only trusted friends to help him get the company started. As the company grew, he insisted that they hire only the most capable young minds and strove to create a small and creative environment for them to thrive in. Microsoft succeeded not only because of Gates, but also because of the strong team that stood behind him.

He Took a Long-Term Approach: “In the decade ahead I can predict that we will provide over twice the productivity improvement that we provided in the ‘90s,” said Gates. This bold statement captures Gates’ philosophy behind his entire business. Never one to chase after instant success or an immediate pay-off, Gates began coding software with a view to the next fifty years. He has constantly tried to keep his company at the forefront of new technological developments by funding new research initiatives. Gates’ long-term approach helped ensure Microsoft’s remarkable staying power.

He Learned From Failure: In hindsight, Gates’ early failures seem so miniscule that they are almost laughable. But, as a struggling entrepreneur, he went through the same frustration, confusion and despair that others in his situation also face. What distinguishes Gates from the rest was his ability to rebound from his mistakes and take whatever lessons he could from them. He then became even more resolute and determined to see his vision realized.

He Never Stopped Asking Questions: “I believe that through our natural inventiveness, creativity and willingness to solve tough problems, we’re going to make some amazing achievements,” said Gates speaking to the future possibilities for medicine, education and technology. When Gates faced a dilemma, he didn’t stop and give up. He asked questions about what could be done to solve the problem. From his business activities to his philanthropic efforts, Gates’ curiosity and desire to constantly be learning has been one of the key factors behind his success.

“If I'd had some set idea of a finish line, don't you think I would have crossed it years ago?” asks Gates. Showing no signs of slowing down, Gates continues to fuel his business, inspire his workers and make his contribution to the global village.

He is a marketing genius. He insured his success in early technology because most firms use his product. He persuaded IBM to use his software even though they already had everything necessary. He literally give it to them to try. Everytime Microsoft updates its product, it gets richer.

I think Bill Gates needs to get his act together because the new Vista software is TERRIBLE! If he doesn't watch his back and give his customers what THEY WANT, some other company is eventually going to crush Microsoft.

well linux is way better os than windows becuse it gives you the freedom.

with windows their is alot of copyright all over it lol.

The only reason people use windows becuse they grew up with it and right now is currently userfriendly. This makes people that don't know about computers to buy such a thing that they can run a business or use computer personally and no need to deal with computer related problems.

Their is alot of people that only think that Windows is the only OS out their.

some people do know about mac and apple os but I a few only know of linux based OS's

their are many more OS out their just havent got the public eye.

the only reason bill gates made it big was becuse he backstabbed his friend according to a movie that was based on how microsoft came about I watched it in eletronics class at my highschool.

I don't really like billgates I just love the hardworking scientists that help create such technology. Look out soon photonics will come can't wait with the speed it will change computers 360 degrees no need to wait for loading screen. We will go the speed of light... Spint and alot of cellphone companies are already using such technology.

The only thing I give props to bill gates is having everyone in the U.S to be able to force them to pay high prices for their OS. That right their is true power.

When I mean force I don't mean he came to you and bent your fingers to buy his os no He created the need for his product today if you notice any gov application or colleges they have ways that you can apply online we are getting computer depended if the IRS soon forces you to file your taxes through the internet could you imagine people that don't have computers will have to go out and buy one. more money for microsoft.

I also got scammed out I had to buy a program to teach me excel and msword for my itcs class paid about 230 bucks for the software and 170 for a used book.

they really milk you.

but I can say bill gates is a true businessman. I have heard he is now trying to build a high tech hospital in cali. I have heard he bought the land and also a hotel the hotel is 3 blocks away and wants to build a underground tunnel from the hotel to the hospital.

Did any of you heard about that?? It supposed to be the most techy hospital in the U.S when it gets build. He was on bbc news I think talking about that, it was during when he took retirment from microsoft or what ever during that time he talked about his new venturs and they showed a 3d model concept of the hospital.

Check this cartoonish thing I found on youtube it's funny. : YouTube - SuperNews! - Gates vs. Jobs

You seem kinda angry against him. Sure, it's true Microsoft isn't known as a open-source company. But that's what Linux is for...I personally use Ubuntu 7.10 and Vista (dual-boot) and I find both great. I find ubuntu better, at least potential wise, but that's not to say Vista is horrible like most people say it is. I've been using for like 6 months without a single bluescreen, and it runs quite nicely even with games like Crysis, etc (this is on my Asus G1s laptop).

Anyway, even if Bill did steal his original OS from his partners way back when. There is NO ONE that can argue his marketing genius that put Microsoft on the market. I mean, he literally brought his company from his basement to front of American business in just a few short years! There's almost no other success story as great as his in that short amount of time. And to top it off, he and his wife now have the largest charity foundation in the world and are using it's influence to help change the world into a better place.

I may sound like a Windows apologist, but I use Ubuntu daily, and even find it better than Vista/XP. BUT, I DO NOT DOUBT the genius behind Bill Gates, and find it disgusting when people flame him for doing the things he did. For the most part, he has changed the world in a good way, and will continue to.
