which programs?

I am trying to learn how to make my own website. What programs do you recommend I look into? Are there any out there to help teach me? After I know the basics what should I look at doing next? I want to create my own banner and web pages. Mostly start with my very own banner and I will be happy.
Thanks

What's your budget? You can go the professional route with Photoshop for graphics and Dreamweaver for web development. Or you can use good old html editors and GIMP if you're a beginner.

Start playing around with free sites like Bravenet

Then you can also do many Banner and link sites + I would also recommend doing a few Private Label Storefronts. See: www.ViralJunction.com and www.PrivateLabelHQ.com

+ a blog. Those are few great easy ways to get started.

After a website is complete what would I need to turn it into an ecommerce site? Just a shopping cart program?

I'll double what tekmoney says, get the Gimp. For a beginner you won't be able to tell it from photoshop. And it's not going to break the bank like photoshop: it's free.

As far as learning to do this stuff, just learn to google with the word "tutorial": Results 1 - 10 of about 2,870,000 for gimp tutorial. (0.04 seconds)

If you're doing this to learn, you don't need anything fancy to do web development, just a text editor. A good resource to start learning is www.w3schools.com. I'd suggest learning HTML, CSS, and PHP in that order.

There are quite a few shopping cart programs available out there and most of them are pretty easy to get running. However, if you want to do much customization, you will need to understand the code beneath them.
