Question User authentication (Login features) for websites.

Hello All. I have a web hosting site, and I was wondering if any people knows how to implement a login system into a webpage? Some what like a password protected directory but for pages. What I am seeking is some type of system which enables users to access their own individual page. Which contains content updated by the admin. I have tried seaching all over the net, but the systems I have seen cost money, or require programming
(mySQL and or PHP). I'm not a programming freak, but I know the basics of HTML and Javascript.
An automated system would be nice though.
Thanks

If your hosting, your users should get their own account name/password. Is that what you mean?

I've written custom logins in the past with member-specific pages and such. What you'll require is a database designed holding user names, passwords, and any other pertinent data. You should use one way encryption when comparing the user-entered string to the stored string to make deciphering the passwords directly from the database near impossible.

You'll need to validate the credentials entered and store them via cookie or register the variables within PHP or ASP. Once the session variables are registered you can check their status and subsequently qualify their validity on every page before loading.

Once qualified you simply use their value to query the database for the required information within their record and utilize it within the web page, and update or replace as necessary.

Yes, each user gets their individual account name and password, which proceedes to an individualized page.

Not sure who you have your hosting account with, but many companies provide basic authentication free, or for a small charge.

In many cases this is as simple as creating a text file with a list of user name and password pairs.

Give your hosting company a call and let them know what you are trying to do. It may save you a lot of time and bother.

Yes, how exactly are you hosting people? Shouldn't you use a reseller account with WHM and CPanel?

i agree with insomnia. cpanel works great. its pretty easy to use and does all of the work for you, all you do is create the accoutns, amount of hdd space and bandwidth. things like that.

of course if you plan on making it more robust yer gonna have to do some programming or find someone who can. robust meaning, making it possible to do all this without having to create logins and passwords for each new user.

Thumbs up

I'm not talking about re-seller hosting. I host files (music files to be specific) and they link those files to their site. I basically provide streaming music to blog users. I want a login and authentication so each person can view pending files, current files, & etc. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks anyways everyone!

See my post above. Most hosting companies are pretty friendly and will talk through your requirements, so I'm sure they can help with what you need.
