I lot of people are getting in with little niches ike petspace and carspace. Not everyone is going after the teen market they are trying to focus on a common interest among people.

can anyone point me to some good resources on how to start such a site..i have a concept for a new social networking site but want to do more research on what it will take to complete the site (is it easy to build), how much it will cost, etc..if anyone can help me out, i would really appreciate it!

How are these sites making money? I just don't see an avenue other than marketing or ads.

They make money off advertising and selling the sites.

I started up my own sometime ago and it has slowly been evolving into a completely different concept. Yesterday, we expanded the site with a new design and a new emphasis on the fashion element.

It's a 'crowded' space to be sure, but so are a lot of areas in business. Right now, I think it's about finding the niche and expanding accordingly.
