I don't know about the most powerful. But the most effective and widely spread used anti-virus is Norton. Every big corporation in the USA keeps Norton on their system.

Even better than that, having linux instead of windows. Or having a mac instead of a pc is an even better solutuion to anti virus.

This is subjective. Everyone will have a difference in opinion. Most geeks will prefer AVG. Myself included. Unlike dfveteran, I dislike Norton.

The Free version of AVG ticks all the boxes i had Norton once but it is a total nightmare to delete it from your computer as it always left some coding on the system. My service provider in the UK provide us with a suite of software that has anti-virus and loads of other facilities but i always go back to good old AVG and Zone Alarm fire wall and that one is free also. The other 2 items i use are Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy and have never had any major problem with any of my 6 computers.

I have used Norton. I don't like it as much as Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is a lot more thorough with spyware.

Just my $0.02

Norton IS a good product, BUT it sucks up a huge amount of system resources as it tries to sandbox everything.
My preference leans towards Avast for sheer response time to a new viral threat. I've often gotten updates to virii about 5-6 hours after they've been identified. AVG is also VERY good for the intensity of scan it offers, being able to scan archives within archives.

I definitely recommend using Linux, like dfveteran... You can get versions that are optimised to emulate WindowsXP very well now... Xandros, with Wine in the boot sequence, is a great example of having somethign that is, for all intents and purposes, WinXP.
Running it on my laptop, no firewall, no virus scan, and it's still virus free...
