quick website/photoshop question

i wanna make some rollovers for navigation buttons at the top of a web page. i want the entire box to light up, like the home button here, but i dunno what layer options to add to make it do this. i already made a copy of the layer with the "home / about us / etc" on it.

like this:

I am not a Photoshop expert yet, but I thought I would give you an alternative.

I use this method for my buttons, and it looks good.

ok great, combining what i already knew and checking out those links, i got the look i want.

here's the problem.

when i "preview in browser" directly from photoshop, the rollovers work fine.

when i "save for web" and then open it up outside of photoshop in netscape or IE, the rollovers don't work.

anyone have any ideas?

I build rollovers in dreamweaver.

You can see the functions they use (it is used on this site).

I'm only on PhotoShop 7, so not sure how things are done in CS. Does it still come with ImageReady? If so then that is where you should be saving from and it's the 'Save optimised' option you want as that will allow you to save all images and HTML in a single operation.

The above method is good if you have a very complex layout, but if it's just for a button with a single rollover state I'd do it manually. If you're using Dreamweaver then it's really easy, but I'm sure most modern packages will allow you to build a rollover in similar manner.

yeah, it does come with imageready.

i figured out my problem.

after setting up the rollover states and slices and everything, i only "saved for web", which updated the image files, however, what i needed to do was "update HTML." even though the slices and rollover states were there, the html wasn't updated to include the "onmouseover" programming.

once i did that, it worked perfectly.

my only problem now is that when i open up the template in frontpage, and try to add content, when i start typing, it "clears" whatever is in the slice where i want to add content.

what i mean is, for example in one part of the template, i have a small blue box with a title bar for "news"....when i start typing, the blue box dissappears and it just becomes a white box...

hopefully i am being clear....any ideas on why this is happening and how to fix it?

Making rollovers in dreamweaver is really easy. Make sure you name all your images - then highlight the image you want to swap out and go to the behaviors tab and choose "swap image" - it's pretty self explanitory!

i dunno if you missed thatl ast post of mine, i'm not having any problem with the rollovers anymore, the problem is just adding content in frontpage.

You have a table cell with a header image in it and that image disappears when you try to type?

Sounds like you have the image selected, and so when you start to type it over-types it. FrontPage is a bit of a pain when it comes to placing the cursor in certain areas. Just keep clicking around in that area until you see the flashing cursor that show you can type. If you can't seem to click in the right place then click in the cell before it and then use the arrow key on your keyboard to move into the next cell. The first thing you'll probably want to do is put a line break in so that you are typing under the header image.
