how do forums like young entrepreneur and the open zone make money is it only from advertisers?

Those ads at the top. Some advertisers pay for links to stay on the site for a certain number of days and some pay everytime someone clicks on the ads.

I have also seen many forums that ask for donations.

You can also get money off forums by making users pay to subscribe but i doubt that will work unless you are offering some information totally unique or that is hard to be searched for

I don't know, but i read in a newspaper a couple of months ago a person who was in thousands of debt made a donation website and paid enough to cover their debts and go on holiday.

Forum income come in so many currencies. You can bake in ads in between posts etc. Targeted ad that exactly addresses the topic of the post. But foruming is not a goldmine BUT it lead to alot of great things and you can really play an important part in peoples life and thats plenty of payment to begin with.

You are not going to get rich doing forums but you can open many doors to becoming rich.

You can also sell links at the bottom the pages, sponsor a section of the forum and add Banners at the top and bottom.
