My sites had over 10000 hits in 9 days but need your advice

Hy
I set up another site some time ago but in the past 2 weeks i changed the format. It's a world cup site and i am probably sure a very large percentage of you will rubbish it, thats ok everyone has their opinion and thats what i'm here for.
The site was set up to see if i could get 1 million hits in approx 5 weeks ( until final whistle of final game of world cup 2006 ) i know there have been and still are sites of this nature but i just wanted to see if i could get somewhere near or fall flat on my arse, there is a bet on with my wife which is part of the deal of the site.
The site has in the past 9 or 10 days registered over 10,000 hits on the hit counter, i have checked some of the statsitics ( not entirely clued up regarding this ) on the control panel of the web host and to be honest i am utterly lost.
This is my question.
Am i fooling myself into thinking that all these hits are people looking at the site in some manner or is this figure being created another way, it just seems a high figure for a complete novice to acheive in 9 days ?
The site is www.owntheworldcup.com
Mr Moderator please don't ban me or remove this thread i am genuinley seeking advice.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Possibly, do you have any more details on that number? Maybe you got linked on some other sites. Try putting some sort of a visitor tracking code on your site for more details. This is obviously a basic solution and others more experienced might know more.
Something like http://www.statcounter.com/ will give you more details on your visitors which will allow you to see if all those hits are genuine.

10,000 hits is good for 9 or so days. Possibly put some adsense code on it to make a few extra dollars?

Use Google Analytics, it leyouts you really research your users, like top exit pages etc and helps you understand where you need to improve... I would advise updating the look a little and put some well placed ads up where they will get clicks.. then you are onto a winner

He probably doesn't have an account for Google Analytics. Go with extremetracker.com, they're reliable

Have you checked your stats to see what the exact unique hits are?
