You should be bringing in a pretty good amount of traffic before charging enough to make $5000 per month in adspace.. but it's do-able! Take a look at John Chow's website, and he breaks down how he makes over $12,000 per month from his blog.

There are many factors:

What type of ads are they? flat rate, ppc, cpm, etc.
The placement of ads on your site.
If ppc, what’s the average click through ratio?
If ppc, what’s the average amount per click?
I could go on.....

Advertising is over rated. Most people end up making a lot less than what they thought they were going to. So be conservative in your forecasts.

$5000 per month? You are going to need a big, no.... giant site.

Before this I heard that it is reasonable for you to set 10% of your daily hits as the amount of charges. For example, if you have 500 hits per day, so charging $50 per month is reasonable.

For you case, let say you are selling 5 ad space and charging $1000 per ad space on average. Then you need 10,000 daily hits to make the $5000.

Just a simple calculation base on what I heard.

I'm a person who thought that advertising space used to be the wave of the future, but honestly, if you can pull many user's to your site then I recommend passing the opportunity of selling advertising space.

I recommend the motion of affiliate programs. If you can find programs through CJ, Azoogle, RevenueUniverse, etc. that relate to your site's topics, then I suggest affiliate marketing. Think about it this way: You have an online blog dedicated to teaching about college education. You go on your account at CJ.com and apply for the "Monster Learning" program. They pay $13.00 per LEAD (somebody clicks the banner on your site and goes and fills out the Monster Learning form.)

If you gain almost 10k users a month and 60 people a month out of the 10k decide to check out the program... you do the math... thats $780 just for blogging about college stuff. Not bad huh, I think if Yaro Starak saw this, he'd probably agree that affiliate marketing and blogging somewhat go hand in hand
