Adsense ads don't need to be disturbing to your readers. If you stye them to reflect the look of your site you can basically place them anywhere and have readers not be like ewww ads.
For example. The IP House, What's My IP Address? I made a 1 page site to show me the ip address of the network I am on. I added some adsense links right between my two content areas. I don't think that those ads are distracting at all. They do not get alot of clicks because they aren't really needed, but I don't think they take away from the site at all.
Josephian,
Why were you banned, and why was this a good experience?

Talk about not taking away from your site. I looked at the page, closed the window and thought to myself that I read something wrong and there were no ads on the site. But then I read your post again and then looked at your site again and it still took a moment to find the ad. Very well placed.
I believe that Google adsence can be very good source of money. I mean not huge amounts but if you get enough traffic to your site the adsence can easily be enough to pay for your hosting and then some. When my site first came online I could make upwards of $5 a day. Unfortunately I believe that a lot of the traffic in the beginning was spammers. Since the spammers have seen that there is nothing on my site for them they have tapered off and so has my traffic.
If you are not too sure about adsence then here is one idea. If your site has multiable pages (since most do). Then figure out what are the 3 most visited pages on your site besides the index. Try to place an adsence ad on those 3 pages and see how they do for like 2 months. Then you will see what kind of money they bring in and also if you think they are worth it.
I have more to say but do not want to hijack the post too much.
