"Illegal" website editing

I've got a page made from Microsoft Publisher, but the problem is that when people click on the Source, they see
<META NAME="Generator" CONTENT="Microsoft Publisher 98">
which might be unprofessional.

I'm still learning about web design, so I can't figure out how to make the same page (graphic-intensive) using Dreamweaver yet.

I'm wondering, if I simply deleted that line, or replaced it with something else, would it affect the page in any way?

For example:

Instead of
<META NAME="Generator" CONTENT="Microsoft Publisher 98">

I edit it by notepad to a random name:
<META NAME="Generator" CONTENT="TA">

Then I save it and upload the page.

Would this mess up the page in any way? Physically I can't see any difference, but I'm not sure if this will make the page go wrong or something.

That will definetly work, or you can simply delete it. That particular meta tag isn't relevant to page rank (so I have heard).

What exactly is that line for anyway? Apart from being there, I'm assuming it doesn't actually do anything?

Nope, it basically defines to the world what software made the site. Not necessary, I always remove it. Although, I don't think newer versions use it at all.

You can turn it off in the options somewhere. Have a dig around.

A good web designer can spot a FrontPage site a mile away though!

Why are you having problems doing the same thing in Dreamweaver? The layout of the package is not as straight forward initially - especially for those used to using Word - but it'll do everything in FP and a whole lot more.

<edit> Should really read these things properly. I see you're using Publisher, not FrontPage. The option to stop that line appearing may still be available. Be careful creating sites from graphical designs as they can often look very bad on different systems/screen sizes etc.
