I would also have to say press releases and use press release distribution services (like prweb.com). Don't be afraid to pay for these services. Depending on your site, you can post on digg, technorati, milk and cookies, i am bored.

I created a lot of buzz with my celebrity maps site using these techniques, and it got mentioned in many places virually. Based on my experience, getting buzz is easy, but keepin the buzz is WAAAYYY HARD.

I'm 24 and I used to go to UC Irvine. I have been creating websites for a while, but only recently have been making serious money online.

This is from a site that distributes press releases. They have some good tips, etc.

I too enjoyed the Buzz Marketing book.

OK, what you're talking about is simply having something that is different and even whacky enough to be newsworthy.

It can be your product, or the way you deliver it, or even the way that you treat your employees.

Take a hard look at your business and identify which areas you can make newsworthy cost-effectively.

Dont try to do more than one thing at a time, this way you can look for coverage at various stages of your company's development.

Examples:
1- I am currently adopting a novel means to manage staff, which is likely to create some media interest (specially local media) in my company.
I will not see the benefit of this move for another 12 months or so, but I believe it will deliver on the investment. Sepcially as it will attract better quality candidates to work for IZLY.

2- I am carrying out a publicity stunt in London. I am using one of our see-through holographic screens (20 M long x 5 M high) and placing it between two rods embedded into the river Thames. I wil be projecting a video of a Loch-Ness type creature creating the illussion that there really is a beast of this type in the river. We will point our sound projectors for added effect at passers by, who will not be able to ignore the noises coming from the river.
I will follow this up with reports of sightings on related websites (those that are frequented by people who believe in Nessie, UFOs and other super natural phenomenons); then place calls to the local radio stations and then to the print papers. Will follow this through with phone video footage of the monster sent to those papers that like to cover stories that are out of this world, and then similar footage to the TV networks.

If it works, it will be a great project that will show the effectiveness of our products in creating publicity.

You can have many variations of this, including UFOs (a screen between two buildings), ghosts floating in mid air, etc.

Basically, you need to be creative to create something that will capture the imaginations of the media, who are a tough crowd to please. Unless, of course, you just happen to stumble on a great idea by default.

Good luck

Sam
