How to attract members to a new community site

Hey guys,

Have started to work with my community site again and have managed to attract 5 new members per day since a week. The problem is the low activity on the site.. which probably is the most common problem:
How to get the members to be active on the site! To post threads in the forums, to send messages to each others etc.

I would appreciate all suggestions!

Hi - I guess you just need to encourage as many people to visit the forum as possible. The more people visiting, the more likely people will post. It should then snowball from there

Yea thats it! I have been creating some "fake users" and starting off some threads.. not the most ethical method but hey, u gotta get your hands dirty in order to get something done.

But even though I start some threads, people seem to be too afraid to reply to the threads or even start their own threads.. I think my problem is that the user is not aware of that some users are online.

Good luck with your forums!

I see your point Tom,
but the thing is.. I seem to have users.. and people willing to register themselves on the page.. the problem is to actually keep them and convince them to log in the day after aswell!.. there are alot of one-timers.. they register and then forget about the page. I will put up a mailing list soon in order to bring these users back but there is the risk that they will just do the same thing over again if they dont see any activity on the page.. so I am waiting a lil´ bit.

what you should be doing is not building an online community

what you should be doing is building a virtual home for offline communities

market your product to groups rather than individuals
